Spoken Chinese Through Film

Spoken Chinese through Film is an elementary high level language and culture class. It is designed for those who have completed Elementary I & II courses or have similar Chinese learning experience and are interested in practicing spoken Chinese from movies. Learners will be exposed to certain excerpts of movies and learn the way of speech within. In addition, they will learn the language structure and culture behind the language. In total, this 10 week course will cover 10 topics including greetings, showing appreciation and other feelings, ordering food at a restaurant, and bargaining. By the end of each meeting, students should be able to understand and reproduce the spoken language learned. One feature of this course is that the 10 topics are independent from each other, meaning that the later topics are not a continuum based on earlier ones. This way learners can drop in at any point of the semester needless to worry about what they’ve missed. A discount code is available for (1) those taking multiple CI courses at the same time, (2) community members 60 years old or above. Email Dr. Li at
