The Ohio Kentucky Consortium of Physical Therapy Programs Fall Workshop - Dual Roles in Assessment and Mentoring in Physical Therapy: A Contemporary View

Saturday November 9, 2019 from 8:00am-4:15pm at Cleveland State University

Clinical educators face numerous challenges and must manage multiple responsibilities while striving to effectively mentor physical therapy students in busy and complex healthcare environments. The purpose of this course is to discuss the dual role that clinical instructors undertake balancing critical assessment with supportive mentoring of students. We will summarize contemporary concepts in student readiness and assessment, along with strategies to create efficiency in assessment and mentoring. We will also explore challenges related to student mental health and well-being, along with strategies to foster a supportive, efficient approach to clinical teaching and mentoring in all students. An exemplar of a mentor training program will be presented and clinicians will have the opportunity to network and generate ideas for one’s own clinical site.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Define student readiness from multiple perspectives.
2. Explore various formal and informal assessment tools to develop strategies and processes for clinical education.
3. Implement strategies to increase efficiency in mentoring students while balancing the multiple demands of clinical practice.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the growing concern for the mental health and overall well-being of students.
5. Recognize potential signs of student performance issues due to stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges.
6. Develop strategies and a supportive approach to mentoring that fosters emotional resilience in all students during clinical education.
7. Generate ideas for the development of a mentor training program at one’s own clinical site.
