Potluck & Politics: America's Political Institutions

Join us for an evening of food and fellowship. We'll begin with a potluck dinner where we each bring a favorite dish to share, then settle in for an interesting presentation and discussion. This interactive program will begin by examining how America's governing structure and institutions came to be. We will consider the specific Federalist Papers - public relations documents that appeared in newspapers - that provided the rationale for the creation of the large republic that endures to this day, despite attacks throughout our history that threatened to undermine or destroy the republic. We will examine two such 'attacks' of the modern era: first, the Watergate scandal that proved the effectiveness of our political and governing institutions in protecting the republic and, finally, the threats posed by today's ultra-political partisanship, the advent of non-traditional news media, and the misuse of social media by domestic and foreign actors.
