Violence and Mental Health: What are the causes of and solutions for violence and aggression in today’s society?    NEW!

This workshop will explore the multiple factors that lead to aggressive and violent behavior.

The combination of post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury that often precipitates violent behavior in many combat veterans is one example of such a combination of factors. Other factors causing personal violence include psychopathy, substance abuse, paranoia/psychosis, affective disorder, bullying, and victimization by physical and sexual abuse.

Outbursts of mass violence by disturbed individuals are a growing trend, exacerbated by media sensationalism. Individual risk factors are embedded within larger, societally and culturally based causes of violence, such as racial discrimination, poverty, nationalism, etc.

The presenters have worked in the correctional as well as community counseling setting and will share their observations and experiences of the potent interaction of mental illness and violence. Social and psychological theories will be reviewed that relate to assessment and treatment of affective, behavioral and cognitive related disorders. Multiple case examples from clinical practice will help demonstrate these concepts. Lively discussion from a variety of perspectives will be expected from the workshop participants on the very personal and professional impact of violence in our society.
