Ethical Concerns in Integrating Spirituality into Psychotherapy

Many mental health professionals now recognize the importance of an awareness of their clients’ spiritual beliefs and values. As therapists move into integrating spiritual beliefs into therapy, there are a number of ethical concerns and potential missteps which can interfere with good clinical work.

Understanding the influences of one’s own beliefs, dual relationship issues, and other interpersonal factors can help counselors avoid these problems. A thorough grounding in spiritual assessment, as well as decision-making on when to include spiritual interventions, will aid in more positive therapy outcomes.

Dr. Elliott brings decades of clinical experience in integrating spirituality into therapy with a variety of client populations to her presentations. She is an experienced presenter and trainer, with a strong ability to connect with seminar participants, and an empathic understanding of the therapist’s real-life challenges and concerns. Using engaging humor, and illustrating concepts with numerous clinical examples, she helps participants gain confidence in their ability to work with compassion and confidence with spiritual aspects of therapy. In creative experiential exercise throughout the day, she helps her audience broaden their repertoire of methods to break through into new avenues of growth for their clients.
