Paws with Patience for Patients: Health Benefits of Therapy and Service Animals

Over 30 years of research supports the health benefits of pets/companion animals, which are used for a wide variety of physical, psychological, cognitive, and emotional disabilities for individuals of all ages. Healthcare practitioners and professionals in a variety of social services fields should be aware of the multiple uses of therapy animals and service animals for their patients with a variety of mental, emotional, psychological, and social concerns. Participants will be introduced to the cognitive, physical, and psychological/emotional tasks and benefits provided by therapy animals and service animals. The various types of service animals and therapy animals will be discussed, as well as recent policy trends in support of therapy animals and service dogs for individuals with disabilities. Participants will gain basic knowledge to begin to “prescribe” the appropriate use of animals to support their client’s distinctive, individual needs.
