Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Mental Health: From Snake Oil to Fish Oil

Professionals should utilize evidence-based practices in the treatment of mental health disorders, yet it is often difficult to keep up with new and emerging approaches, particularly complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). In addition clinicians must be able to navigate the cognitive biases held by clients, colleagues, and themselves when assessing the validity of CAMs. This workshop will explore cognitive biases that can impact judgment, examine methods and factors that impact research outcomes including study design and expectation effects, and review current CAMs and their level of, or lack of, evidence base - with attention paid to the critical thinking skills necessary in determining the difference between evidence-based and non-evidence-based practices and reputable resources for obtaining further information. Some of the approaches that will be assessed include dietary approaches, manipulation methods, relaxation techniques, music therapy, light therapy, and more.
