Wildcat Community ESL   

Wildcat ESL

The Wildcat ESL class provides two levels of ESL classes, beginner and intermediate, to community residents and CWU employees. Levels are determined by placement testing done by University ESL staff at the beginning of the quarter. Students can expect a wide variety of interactive activities in class and homework assignments. The ESL classes will be capped at 45 students total. This class will follow the CWU academic calendar. Registration is $25.00 per quarter. Each quarter builds on the previous quarter.


     Class meeting days:

     Intermediate class meets Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. 11:00 am – 11:50 am

     Beginner class meets Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. 10:00 am – 10:50 am

     Computer class will start the following week on Monday, January 14th from 10-11.


     First day of class: Tuesday, January 8th.
    There will be a level test for new students and returning beginners at 10:00 am.


     Textbook:Focus on Grammar (Included in registration cost)

     Instructor: Cami Bello

     Classrooms:
     Classroom Location to be determined on first day of class.

     Communication with students:
     The instructor will communicate with students through a private Facebook page to relay necessary information
     outside of class (class cancellations, changes to meeting times/locations, etc.). Therefore, it is important for all
     students to have access to Facebook. We will discuss the Facebook page on the first day of classes.

Students can expect to develop greater skills in listening and speaking for basic communication in the classroom, outside the classroom and at work. Expand reading and writing skills, introduction of basic grammar.

Intermediate Class:
Refine skills needed in conversations and written communication beyond survival needs. Skills needed to function effectively in familiar and unfamiliar social situations and familiar work situations. Communication needed to discuss/interpret cultural differences and use English to solve problems outside the class.

Writing: 2-3 paragraphs, short essays, letters, applications

Grammar:
Review of present, past, and future tenses, modals (can, should, have to, etc).
Present perfect (I have lived here for two years).
Present perfect continuous (I have been studying English for 2 months.).
Past continuous (I was sleeping when the phone rang.).
Future conditional – (If I have time, I will _____.).
Comparative (Los Angeles is bigger than San Diego.).
Infinitives and gerunds (I want to get a job. I enjoy watching TV.)
