This workshop will differentiate "help" vs "assist" when is comes to dealing with veterans or other traumatized groups. The importance of these two terms will become clear as we outline the methods to avoid enabling individuals who are seeking counseling or services from a provider. No one can empower another human being, but an individual can set the stage for the client to find their own power and maintain control of their life. We will examine several cases where both events happen, i.e. "enabled or empowered", and tease out some of the communications that may have caused either to occur.
Objectives:
1. Participants will understand the importance of assisting traumatized individuals vs. helping.
2. There will be a discussion of when it might be important to "help" temporarily, rather than "assist", to differentiate the reasons to "help."
3. Through case studies the participants will learn about communication processes that may move a client towards being enabled and vice versa, communications that would hopefully lead to empowerment.
4. Participants will learn about certain client profiles that would make them more susceptible to enabling or empowerment.
5. Participants will be asked to share their own cases in order to further illuminate the processes the have been helpful to empowering a client and those that have not been as helpful.
