A Look at the Caustic Humour and Insight of Muriel Spark

This discussion class will discover some of the works of the Scottish writer of poetry, short stories and novels as well as an autobiography: Dame Muriel Spark. For the first session, read the short stories The Executor and Bang-Bang You’re Dead. For the second session, The Seraph and the Zambesi and The Portobello Road. These are collected in Muriel Spark: Selected Stories (Canongate Classics). Session three will look at her novel Memento Mori and the last class will examine her most well-known novel, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Muriel Spark led an eclectic and tumultuous life which informs much of her writings. Now retired from teaching English for the Edmonds School District, Ginny continues to value literature as an essential tool in understanding our country, our world and ourselves.
