Poems and Lore of the Viking Age

In this course we will read selections from the 13th century Elder Edda, a collection of Icelandic poems recounting the lore and adventures of the Norse gods. Our text will be the Penguin Classics translation by Andy Orchard. (NOTE: there are many translations of this work which vary substantially, get the Orchard translation so we will all be on the same page.) Students are asked to read the Voluspa and Havamal for the first meeting. Sean Taylor holds a PhD in English from UW and has taught as a professor at Portland State University and Hamilton College. His main areas of expertise are Old and Middle English Literature.
