Slow, precise, and surprisingly soothing – this class introduces English Paper Piecing, a hand-sewing technique that builds shapes into patterns using paper templates and invisible whipstitches. It’s portable and methodical in the best way – the kind of stitching you can do sitting on the couch while the world quiets down. In this two-hour session we will cover fabric cutting and grain, basting techniques, layout planning, crisp points, and how to finish without warping your seams. Everyone will leave with a finished hexie rosette coaster or appliqué patch, plus the skills to scale up to bags, garments, wall hangings, and quilts. All materials are included: pre-cut templates, pre-cut fabrics, thread, tools, and a take-home resource sheet. Join us for a calm class with plenty of hands-on help. Matthew Addonizio is a designer and multimedia artist in Philadelphia. He attended Kalamazoo College and has been working in fiber arts professionally for the past several years. His eponymous label (Matthew Addonizio LLC) and his fabric import company (Approved Textiles LLC) work with artisan communities in India and Africa to produce fabric and clothing using traditional hand craft techniques. He is the son of Joan Bulmer, a long-time Elderwise Learning member, from whom he inherited this creative curiosity.
