In this class, Linda Siegel will present the major types of learning disabilities. She will explain early identification and interventions to prevent reading problems such as dyslexia and promote reading and language development. She will discuss mathematical learning disabilities. She will also elaborate on the challenges for children learning English as a second language, especially when they have a learning disability. The characteristics of these disabilities, as well as the interventions that can be used to help people with them, will be explained and discussed. Linda Siegel is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. In 2004, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Goteborg University in Sweden. In 2010, she was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence in Psychological Research from the Canadian Psychological Association. In 2012 she was awarded the Eminent Researcher Award from the Learning Difficulties Association of Australia. In 2020, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Dyslexia Association. She has written a book entitled Not Stupid, Not Lazy: Understanding Dyslexia and Other Learning Disabilities, published by the International Dyslexia Association.
