IN-PERSON: The Elderwise classroom at the Vineyard Church
“Oh, shucks, where’d I put my phone?” “What did you say your name was?” These are common questions, but the question we want to answer in this presentation is how to tell when memory lapses like this might be signs of a serious brain disorder, dementia. We will discuss potential dementia warning signs and what to do if they appear. Then, we will discuss some new evidence-based news about reducing our risk of developing dementia, and some even more exciting news about progress against the brain disease that causes most cases of dementia. Jim Mangi, PhD has been caring for his wife with Alzheimer’s for 16 years. As a longtime community education volunteer, he has taught hundreds of classes for the Alzheimer’s Association, and made presentations statewide for the Association, for AARP, and for the Wayne State Institute of Gerontology, about dementia and the caregiving experience. He chairs Dementia Friendly Saline, a nonprofit organization which works to make life in the community less difficult for persons with dementia. Dementia Friendly Saline runs the nation’s first Dementia Friendly movie program.
