Come and explore the secrets of the world’s most diverse spirit in this accredited tasting masterclass with Flagler College professor, Dr. Zac Cole and founder of the Academy of Wine and Spirits, Christian Esser. Delve into rum's rich history, from its origins in the Caribbean to its vital role in global culture.
This seminar offers a comprehensive look at what makes rum so varied: the impact of raw materials (cane juice vs. molasses), distillation methods (pot vs. column), and aging in tropical and continental climates. You will learn to confidently identify the major styles (English, French, Spanish) and understand label transparency. The core of the class is a guided, structured tasting of nine benchmark rums from around the world, showcasing a spectrum of styles from funky pot still to crisp agricole. The course concludes with an optional review and the award of the internationally-recognized Certified Rum Explorer™ certificate, officially endorsed by the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers’ Association Inc. (WIRSPA) and the Authentic Caribbean Rum (ACR) Marque. Small bites will be served to complement the various styles. Relax and enjoy an evening of accredited spirits education at the historic Markland House!
