Come experience one of Europe’s most spectacular capitals, Lisbon! Focusing on the earthquake of 1755 – the natural disaster that rocked the Enlightenment – learn about the city’s place in the history of early modern Europe. Explore cultural heritage preceding Lisbon’s destruction – as well as more recent claims to memory of the golden age of Portuguese exploration and empire. Learn about the causes of the earthquake of 1755, and the responses that followed on the initiative of the Marquis of Pombal, one of Portugal’s most colorful – and controversial – historical figures.
