Join Dr. Nicholas Miller, Associate Professor of History at Flagler College for a special Lifelong Learning travel experience tour of Lisbon, Portugal, with a focus on the infamous earthquake of 1755! Come experience one of Europe’s most spectacular capitals, Lisbon! Focusing on the earthquake of 1755 – the natural disaster that rocked the Enlightenment – learn about the city’s place in the history of early modern Europe. Explore cultural heritage preceding Lisbon’s destruction – as well as more recent claims to memory of the golden age of Portuguese exploration and empire. Learn about the causes of the earthquake of 1755, and the responses that followed on the initiative of the Marquis of Pombal, one of Portugal’s most colorful – and controversial – historical figures. Visit remarkable museums, memorials, historical sites, parks, and gardens across the region, guided by local experts with insider knowledge! Taste Portugal’s culinary delights from its world-class seafood to its decadent desserts. Sample the country’s famous wine through a vineyard visit and a memorable wine tasting. Soak in Lisbon’s stunning views at the city’s many viewpoints, including the Castle of Saint George and the Águas Livres Aqueduct.
