Films: Classics by the Decades

This course will view and discuss 8 films covering different traditions, technologies, and perspectives, dating from 1927 through 2015. The films do not have a single theme but all do explore the relationship of the individual to his/her society. We will discuss the background of each film, its thematics and techniques, and why it may be regarded as a Classic. The films include "Metropolis” (the restored version, German silent, 1927); "The Magnificent Ambersons" (USA, 1942); "Nights of Cabiria" (Italy, 1957); "The Shop on Main Street" (Czechoslovakia, 1965); "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" (USSR, 1980); "Taste of Cherry" (Iran, 1998); "Departures" (Japan, 2008) and "The Lobster" (Greece, 2015).
