Lenny Bruce once commented that "I'm not a comedian. And I'm not sick. The world is sick, and I'm the doctor. I'm a surgeon with a scalpel for false values." When American culture began to change in the late 1960s, most comics were looking tired and irrelevant to a younger generation experimenting with drugs and protesting the war in Vietnam. It was at this point that George Carlin evolved into the most important comedian in America. The transformation Carlin helped bring about in comedy has become so ingrained that he has become immortalized as one of America's most radical and courageous artists. This course will include a review of Carlin's life with segments from his HBO Specials and selected video pieces from his career. Please note: You will be exposed to Carlin's "colorful" language and imagery.

The Golden Age of Jazz Guitar |
Presenter: Tony Zannini |
Member tuition: $30.00 |
Sessions: 3 Tu – 10/4/2022-10/18/2022 |
Time: 1:00 PM-2:00 PM |
Location: Manchester Community Music School, 2291 Elm Street Manchester, NH 03104 |
According to Scott Yanow in his book, The Great Jazz Guitarists: The Ultimate Guide, "The history of the guitar in jazz can be divided into three separate struggles; the battle to become part of jazz, to be audible, and to find its own role in the music. It took some time, but the jazz guitar won all three battles and is now in its golden age." In this course, we'll look at the styles of some truly legendary icons like Charlie Christian who was one of the first performers to embrace the electric guitar during the mid-1930's, popularizing it as a jazz instrument and finding national fame when he joined Benny Goodman's group in 1939. As well as more modern-day artists like Pat Metheny who burst onto the scene in the mid-1970's collaborating with classical composers like Steve Reich, jazz legends like Herbie Hancock, and pop stars like David Bowie! Together we'll listen to performances by a variety of truly great jazz guitarists, explore their approaches to improv, and talk about what makes them special.
