From Our Farm to Your Table: Tour Miles Smith Farm |
Presenter: Carole Soule |
Member tuition: $20.00 |
Sessions: 1 F – 5/26/2023 |
Time: 10:00 AM-11:30 AM |
Location: Miles Smith Farm, 56 Whitehouse Road Loudon, NH 03307 |
Miles Smith cleared the land and built the farmhouse in the 1830s. Today the Miles Smith Farm is home to grass-fed cattle, pigs, ducks, geese and a rabbit. Cattle's life on a local farm is vastly different from large scale operations. Present-day owners Carole Soule and Bruce Dawson consider themselves "grass farmers" because their cattle thrive on grass in the summer and hay in the winter. Scottish Highlander cattle are the pride of Miles Smith Farm and one of the sources of their antibiotic-free beef. There is also a solar-powered retail store at the farm where you can find other local products in addition to meat. The farm also serves as an educational resource to local schools and clubs by practicing rural land use that is environmentally, economically, and culturally sustainable. Concord Monitor readers will recognize Carole from her weekly articles about farm life. Wear sturdy shoes for the farm tour and allow extra time to shop in the retail store.

Removing Greenhouse Gases From the Atmosphere: Direct Approaches to Limiting Warming |

Time: 1:00 PM-2:30 PM |
Location: UNH Professional Development & Training, 230 Commerce Way Portsmouth, NH 03801 |
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential part of Earth’s atmosphere for plants, animals and mineral formation. It also helps to balance global temperatures because it absorbs and re-emits solar radiation which heats the atmosphere, land and oceans. Over the past several hundred years we have unbalanced atmospheric levels of CO2 by burning fossil fuels used for manufacturing, travel and heating. This has caused natural global warming to accelerate to levels that soon may not be tolerated by many plants and animals (including humans) on the planet. Reducing CO2 emissions by limiting use of fossil fuels is the current approach to reducing human-caused global warming. In this class we will examine another approach that could more rapidly limit the effects of this long-lived greenhouse gas – Sequestration. This approach directly removes CO2 from the atmosphere, breaks it down to its carbon and oxide forms using biologic and geologic methods and then isolates it for thousands of years to keep the carbon from re-oxidizing and reentering the atmosphere. There are several scientific and commercial projects taking place and we will discuss what is known of their feasibility, effectiveness and potential cost.
