The First Populist President: Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson was this country’s seventh President and is considered our nation’s only other populist President. Before being elected to the presidency, Jackson gained fame as a general in the Army and served in both houses of Congress. As president, Jackson sought to advance the rights of the “common man” against a “corrupt aristocracy” and to preserve the Union. His time as president would mark a major shift for the United States and the first two years of his term were marred by scandal. Jackson claimed an election had been rigged, and he also is noted for his role in the forced relocation of Native American tribes.
