After World War II Korea was divided into two parts. The north was led by a communist dictator, the south was protected by the U.S. military. But in June 1950 North Korea, in a surprise attack, invaded the south, pushing the South Korean army and the U.S. Military to the south of the Peninsula in what is called the Korean Conflict. Eventually the South Koreans and the Americans fought back, pushing the North Koreans back to the border of China which then invaded, pushing us back to the 38th Parallel. South Korea eventually gained a truce in 1953. South Korea had a dictatorship until a change occurred in 1987 due to the Olympics which caused the end of the dictatorship. In late 2024, the South Korean president staged a coup which failed. If you want to understand what just happened in South Korea, attend the class to fill in the holes in your knowledge of the region.
