The Foothills Historical Museum was started in 1981 by local veterinarian Jess Rose and his wife Maxine.  Their intention was to preserve the specific history of this area.  In 1892, Buckley became the transportation hub for a booming economy based on logging, coal mining and farming. The coming of the railroad opened up the heavily forested area to farmers, mill workers, miners, and lumberjacks.  Settlements filled with a multinational population in company towns like Wilkeson, Carbonado, Hope, Fairfax, Melmont, South Prairie and Burnett. The Museum is dedicated to telling their stories. Recent additions to our exhibits include a collaboration with the Muckleshoot Tribe, and an extensive exhibit that is dedicated to the military service within our communities. We will soon be opening a new exhibit that highlights what used to be a thriving dairy industry.

Most visitors to Bonney Lake only see the many retail establishments along Highway 410 that have sprung up in the last 30 years.  While these are part of the ongoing story of the town, to see the real history of Bonney Lake requires one to veer off the beaten path. In conjunction with Pierce County and the City of Bonney Lake, the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society has placed 13 historical markers throughout the area. In addition to viewing the soon-to-be opened Bonney Lake Museum, our narrated bus tour will feature these marker points, including the Naches Trail, Connell’s Prairie Battlefield, the Kelley Farm, the White River Power Plant, and the story of Ken Simmons – Bonney Lake’s founder and first mayor.

Transportation will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch.
