The Foothills Historical Museum was started in 1981 by local veterinarian Jess Rose and his wife Maxine. Their intention was to preserve the specific history of this area. In 1892, Buckley became the transportation hub for a booming economy based on logging, coal mining and farming. The coming of the railroad opened up the heavily forested area to farmers, mill workers, miners, and lumberjacks. Settlements filled with a multinational population in company towns like Wilkeson, Carbonado, Hope, Fairfax, Melmont, South Prairie and Burnett. The Museum is dedicated to telling their stories. Recent additions to our exhibits include a collaboration with the Muckleshoot Tribe, and an extensive exhibit that is dedicated to the military service within our communities. We will soon be opening a new exhibit that highlights what used to be a thriving dairy industry.
