Bosch© CDR Tool Technician Training by IPTM (Online)

Online independent study course conducted over two consecutive weeks.

Presented entirely online, this course will teach you how to use the Bosch© Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) Tool to collect speed and/or crash severity data prior to and during a collision from a variety of modern vehicles.

We will begin with a relevant history of Event Data Recorders (EDRs) and the Bosch© CDR Tool. We will discuss the common terms used in association with EDR technology and you will learn how to load and activate the Bosch© CDR Tool software on your computer.

We will present you with the proper techniques to use when collecting EDR data. You’ll learn how to troubleshoot data collection issues, how to prevent the corrupting or spoiling of data extraction, and the legal issues you need to consider. In addition, we’ll teach you how to use the Bosch© CDR Tool Help File as a current and future resource.

Topics Include

  • Understand the relevant History of Event Data Recorders (EDR) and the Bosch© CDR Tool
  • Learn common “Terms of Art” for EDR technology
  • Load and activate the Bosch© CDR Tool software
  • Use of the Bosch© CDR Tool Help File as a current and future resource
  • Collect EDR data using the Bosch© CDR Tool
  • Troubleshoot data collection issues
  • Prevent spoliation of EDR data
  • Legal considerations

To successfully complete the course, you will be required to use the CDR tool to collect five EDR images from five different vehicles. The data obtained during these self-guided practical exercises will need to be uploaded into the online system.

Two levels of certification are available:

A DLC Technician Certification is available for students who will use the CDR Tool to download data via the vehicles universal communication port (the DLC connector under the vehicle dash). This usually describes vehicles with minor to moderate damage and a functional electrical system.

Prior to the start of the course, you must have in your possession:

  • A version of the Bosch© CDR Software version 3.0 or greater and Activation Certificate
  • A Bosch© CDR hardware kit (version 3.0 or greater)

The Full CDR Technician Certification is an advanced certificate for students with the full CDR hardware kit (hardware version 3.0 or higher). These Full Technician students will collect data from the DLC (as above) and directly from airbag modules. The successful Full Technician should be able to collect data form any vehicle, regardless of damage, by using the Bosch© CDR tool.

Prior to the start of the course, you must have in your possession:

  • A version of the Bosch© CDR Software version 3.0 or greater and Activation Certificate
  • A Bosch© CDR hardware kit (version 3.0 or greater)
  • A 12-volt automotive battery jump-pack with cigarette lighter plug
  • A Volt/Ohm meter (recommended)

Online Details

Online environment: You will have two weeks to complete this self-paced course, which consists of two methods of instruction: formalized training modules and a self-guided practical exercise. During the first week, you will be required to complete 10 training modules. Each module is centered around an online video and a practical exercise or quiz. During the second week, you will demonstrate your ability to use the CDR Tool by collecting data from five different vehicles and submitting the resulting images through OTIS.

Note for international students: You must have access to five Bosch© CDR-covered vehicles. This may require significant effort if you are not in one of the Bosch© covered regions (USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, China, Brazil, Japan, Europe and Puerto Rico).

This is an independent study, self-paced course. Although there are no specific times that you must be online, you will be required to complete assignments by the deadlines posted within the course. Hence, you must be committed to the course and invest the time necessary for successful completion. You should plan to dedicate approximately sixteen hours to the course activities during the first week and eight hours to the practical exercises during the second week.

The instructors will be available by email and discussion boards throughout the course.

Computer requirements: You will complete the course entirely online. A dependable broadband internet connection with a Windows or Mac computer is required. You will also need a valid e-mail account. In addition, you will need a Windows compatible laptop running Windows XP to Windows 8 with a serial port (USB or serial). Assignments will require you to upload data and/or EDR images. Additional technical requirements are listed at: OTIS.iptm.org
