DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Refresher   

This course will refresh your skills in evaluating impaired driving suspects, from the initial observation of the vehicle to the arrest and processing of the suspect.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) recommend that officers who may be responsible for conducting a DWI investigation attend periodic refresher training to maintain both their skills in detecting impaired drivers and proficiency in administration of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs). This course will provide the latest revisions to the program, along with relevant legal changes for DWI prosecution.

Topics Include

  • Recognizing and interpreting evidence of DWI
  • Legal aspects of DWI enforcement
  • Administering and interpreting the SFSTs (to include horizontal gaze nystagmus)
  • Proper documentation techniques
  • Describing DWI evidence clearly and convincingly
  • SFST proficiency

Audience

Patrol officers, DWI investigators and supervisors, prosecutors

This class is restricted to active law enforcement and prosecutors employed by governmental agencies.

Prerequisite(s)

To attend this course, you must have successfully completed the NHTSA/IACP DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) course.

Note(s)

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to participate in Florida Department of Transportation grant funded impaired driving enforcement activities.
