Utilizing lectures, discussions and in-class demonstrations, Dr. Jeff Muttart and Tim Maloney from Driver Research Institute will introduce you to scientific studies and analysis to answer the key questions involving aspects of driver behavior: response and reaction times (and delays), recognition, perception, nighttime recognition and impairment, among others. Topics will focus on obtaining a better understanding of what drivers and pedestrians have done in various crash scenarios. This course is a deep dive into the underlying science of human factors research and methodologies utilized. It will give you a baseline to compare and evaluate the human role in your cases.
You will be introduced to the Response software program—a tool you can use to help analyze drivers’ responses and will learn how to incorporate it into your crash reconstruction. The Response software is based on research from Jeff, the team at Driver Research Institute, and many others in the field.
Topics Include
- Perception-Response Time
- Response to slow moving or stopped vehicles on multi-lane high speed roads
- Nighttime recognition
- Driver decision making
- Interactive Driver Response Research (IDRR)
- Gap acceptance for left turns, right turns, and through movements for drivers, riders, and pedestrians
- Pedestrian walking speeds
- Acceleration
- Lateral acceleration (swerving) for cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles
- Forward and backward acceleration of cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles
- Drivers’ responses to green and yellow traffic signals, deceleration choice, reaction time and probability of stopping
Audience
Law enforcement and private traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, animators and graphic designers
Course Length
40 hours
Prerequisite(s)
You must have completed IPTM’s Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or its equivalent. It is strongly recommended that you have a minimum of five years of field experience in traffic crash investigation.
What to Bring
Recommended
- We highly recommend bringing a laptop as the course materials and final exam are delivered electronically.
Note(s)
Upon successful completion, you will be provided with a 7-day trial of the cloud-based human factors analysis software, Response.
