Active shooter incidents can happen almost anywhere. This course will focus on workplace environments such as office buildings, retail stores, etc. The principles provided in this training will help potential victims in these situations develop the best plan for survival. Protocols advocated by the Department of Homeland Security will be included along with examples on how to minimize the risk of personal injury and quickly resolve the incident. You will learn practical steps that can be taken to escape the danger posed by an active shooter. Finally, you will be provided with a brief overview of what to expect from law enforcement when they arrive on the scene and how you can best help them resolve the situation.
This online, self-paced course will guide you through a history of active shooter incidents to identify the motives and methods that have been used by previous active shooters. This information will help those who may become involved in future incidents. We will explore some of the past changes law enforcement has made to resolve these situations, so you will be able to develop security measures that can help lessen the impact of an active shooter incident.
Active shooters come in many shapes and sizes. To understand their motives and behavior, we will discuss the ten myths about active shooters, the warning signs that may suggest a person is considering and planning an active shooter event, and the steps to take if these warning signs are observed. We will also discuss five categories that influence active shooters’ behavior and how they select their victims.
Where appropriate, resources will be provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help you plan appropriate procedures in the event an active shooter incident occurs at your workplace. A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Online environment: This is an independent study, self-paced course. You should plan to dedicate approximately two hours to the course activities. Instructors are available to answer your questions during each module via the help forum.
