Medical Foundations of Visual Systems Testing (Online)

This is an independent study, self-paced course.

Many courts will not qualify a DRE as an expert unless he or she has received training from a medical professional. This course will provide the medical and scientific foundations of the various components of the DRE protocol, including the eye tests, vital signs and psychophysical and divided attention tasks. Common medical conditions, rule-outs and alternative explanations for observed signs will be discussed. The course will include numerous videos, classroom demonstrations and an alcohol workshop.

This program is intended for officers who are Certified Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) and prosecutors who handle DUI and drug cases as well as DUI instructors and SFST practitioners.

  • Use and abuse of drugs
  • Effects of drugs on the body, the eyes and perception
  • Effects of medical and environmental conditions
  • Testing of eye signs
  • Legal aspects of testing at the traffic stop and the DRE evaluation
  • Trial preparation

Audience

DREs as well as experienced DUI officers and prosecutors

This class is restricted to active law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys employed by governmental agencies.

Online Details

Online environment: This is an independent study, self-paced course. Although there are no specific times that you must be online, you will be required to complete assignments by the deadlines posted within the course. Instructors are available to answer your questions during each module via the help forum.

The course must be completed within 30 days upon registration. Once the 30-day period has ended, you will no longer have access.

Computer requirements: You will complete the course entirely online. A dependable broadband internet connection with a Windows or Mac computer and Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download) are required.

Registration and Fees

Full payment must accompany all registrations. You may register online and pay with your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card, or you may download a Registration Form and mail it to IPTM with a check.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

Complete the Cancellation Request Form and return it to IPTM. No telephone cancellations will be accepted. A 20% administrative fee will be assessed to all refunds if the cancellation request is received within 14 days of the course start date. In lieu of a refund, student substitutions can be made or a credit can be issued for a future course. No refunds will be given for no-shows. If materials for an online course were sent to the student, the appropriate materials and shipping costs will be deducted from the refund amount. Materials may be returned to IPTM in their original condition at the student's expense. Once IPTM has received and inspected them, the refund will be processed.

Due to the automated format of online independent study courses and Videos on Demand (VoDs), no refunds or substitutions can be made after registration.

Course Confirmations

A minimum number of registrations must be received for an in-person class to run as scheduled. When the minimum criterion has been met, written confirmation will be emailed to you. Please do not travel or make airline reservations until you receive written notification confirming that the course will run as scheduled.
