Comprehensive Steps to Investigating the Distracted Driving Crash (VoD)

This presentation aims to give a brief explanation of how cellular phones, networks, and text messaging operate. It is designed to train both new and experienced crash investigators, or the first officers on scene, on how to recognize and properly secure a variety of mobile devices.

We will highlight the evidentiary value of such devices and how to protect and preserve the evidence through appropriate legal and technological procedures. This will enable forensic experts to analyze the information, so you can incorporate their findings into your crash investigation. The presentation will also include several case studies.

Topics Include

  • How to recognize the common types of mobile digital devices
  • How text messages, iMessages and cell calls operate
  • • Procedures for securing and preserving digital mobile devices
  • • Legal requirements for seizing and searching digital mobile devices
  • • Relating digital mobile device evidence to your crash

Audience

Law enforcement, crash investigators, traffic crash reconstructionists, military police and CSI investigators/technicians
