This two-part course prepares medical assistant students for understanding and performing a wide range of clinical procedures by didactic and hands-on methods of teaching. Clinical skills are built on the foundational concepts of infection control and patient safety. Students are then advanced to clinical concepts and skills such as, vital sign taking, phlebotomy and various laboratory techniques and procedures, specimen handling, IV insertion, and electrocardiography and other diagnostic procedures. Students are also introduced to the medical assistant role and skills within the areas of practice specialties. The majority of the course is designed to coincide with anatomy and physiology course topics. Pharmacology is discussed in terms of creating a knowledge base of the most commonly prescribed and used medications; medication list management and patient education about common over-the-counter and prescription medication side effects, allergies, and interactions.
