- Course Code: MAS01 Section: 1
This course is divided into 2 parts. It is designed for medical assistant students to develop a basic knowledge of how complex medical terms are formed and their meanings; emphasis is placed on the spelling and pronunciation of medical terms. Introduction to the basic body structures and processes, all major organs, and body systems and functions. Diseases are discussed as they pertain to each system. Normal and abnormal health conditions are discussed; the most common chronic health conditions are emphasized. The course is designed to coincide with clinical practices course topics as they relate to assisting in the general and specialty examinations. Required textbook: The Language of Medicine by Davi-Ellen Chabner.

Managed care and insurance, and the latest application of coding that is expected of the entry-level medical assistant through theoretical and hands-on methods, are taught. Computer concepts are introduced with special emphasis on computerized practice management, such as telecommunications and electronic medical health record management.

This two-part course prepares medical assistant students for understanding and performing a wide range of clinical procedures by didactic and hands-on methods of teaching. Clinical skills are built on the foundational concepts of infection control and patient safety. Students are then advanced to clinical concepts and skills such as, vital sign taking, phlebotomy and various laboratory techniques and procedures, specimen handling, IV insertion, and electrocardiography and other diagnostic procedures. Students are also introduced to the medical assistant role and skills within the areas of practice specialties. The majority of the course is designed to coincide with anatomy and physiology course topics. Pharmacology is discussed in terms of creating a knowledge base of the most commonly prescribed and used medications; medication list management and patient education about common over-the-counter and prescription medication side effects, allergies, and interactions.
