This two-part course prepares medical assistant students for understanding and performing a wide range of clinical procedures by didactic and hands-on methods of teaching. Clinical skills are built on the foundational concepts of infection control and patient safety. Students are then advanced to clinical concepts and skills such as, vital sign taking, phlebotomy and various laboratory techniques and procedures, specimen handling, IV insertion, and electrocardiography and other diagnostic procedures. Students are also introduced to the medical assistant role and skills within the areas of practice specialties. The majority of the course is designed to coincide with anatomy and physiology course topics. Pharmacology is discussed in terms of creating a knowledge base of the most commonly prescribed and used medications; medication list management and patient education about common over-the-counter and prescription medication side effects, allergies, and interactions. This course is divided into 2 parts. Introduction to the basic body structures and processes, all major organs, and body systems and function. Diseases are discussed as they pertain to each system. Normal and abnormal health conditions are discussed; most common chronic health conditions are emphasized. The course is designed to coincide with clinical practices course topics as they relate to assisting in the general and specialty examinations.

Students are placed in community-based medical practices and hospitals that will offer students the opportunity to apply the clinical skills learned in class in a variety of specialty areas. Students are expected to provide regular self-evaluations as they progress through the clinical experience. Academic and clinical faculty is expected to regularly evaluate students on their class work and at their clinical site to be sure that students are up performing at a safe and satisfactory level. Clinical site preceptors are encouraged to evaluate students and offer faculty their feedback on student progress.
