The focus is on the perspective of the patient with an examination of the barriers to successful patient care and how best to help overcome the barriers.

We will identify what constitutes a chronic condition and how to work with clients with chronic conditions. The focus will also be on the complexities of addiction counseling and the key facts behind alcohol and substance abuse addiction. Prerequisite: PCO 20 Motivational Interviewing (MI).

In this course, you will gain a better understanding of the levels of engagement needed when working with patients with mental health conditions, including identifying unique barrier to successful outcomes; managing a patient in crisis; and recognizing common mental health conditions such a schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. Prerequisite: PCO 30: Chronic Conditions and Addiction: Healthy Outcomes.
