Biological Clocks: The Genetic Basis of Aging

We will explore the genetic and environmental foundations of aging. The body undergoes a series of visible bodily changes during aging. The programmed activation and inhibition of specific families of genes represents the underlying regulation of aging and its visible expression. However, epigenetic (environmental) influences, such as diet, exercise, smoking, drugs, and alcohol, exert powerful influences on life span. We will discuss how the appropriate lifestyle choices maintain a healthy body and thereby favorably influence the length and quality of life. Revised and expanded.
