On a cool Lexington evening at Calumet Farm, Alydar, the most prolific stallion of 1990, was alone in his stall at 10 pm when he mysteriously broke the cannon bone in his right hind leg. He was ultimately euthanized, and the insurance companies paid $40.1 million for his accidental death. It wasn't until Calumet's bankruptcy that it became clear that Alydar was worth more dead than alive. Although there was an FBI investigation and two federal trials, the death of Alydar remained a mystery. Author Fred M. Kray set out to solve it.
Combing through court records, and interviewing over twenty-five witnesses, the author takes you behind the scenes of the FBI investigation and the trials providing information never before known. In his interviews with witnesses, he untangles the different stories told in court and in interviews and reaches a startling conclusion.
The author will take students with him on his investigative trail from start to finish with moderator Tammy Gannt. Talk and book signing.
Perhaps no state or territory in the United States has changed as much as Florida has over the past century. In this talk, take a virtual trip around the state to look at how different areas and landmarks have changed. This pictorial journey will showcase well-known (and little-known) places, featuring photographs from "then" and "now." The talk will also touch on the historical or environmental significance of these places. Finally, those who want to visit these places will have the opportunity to ask questions about how best to do so.
Marion County Supervisor of Elections Wesley Wilcox will educate voters on Florida’s voting laws, new election legislation, and voting options ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election cycle. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about the electoral process and register to vote or update their voter registration.
Please join us to hear Annie Avery, Principal of the Ina A. Colen Academy, and Rebecca Rogers, Executive Director of the Circle Square Foundation as they present the opportunities, challenges, and journey related to creating a new charter school. They were instrumental in the school's creation and can address the vision behind the establishment of the Ina A. Colen Academy, and how that vision relates to the changing models of delivering education programming.
This presentation is a talk about the often strange and sometimes contentious backstories about the drive to define Florida's shifting identity through legislation recognizing objects as varied as trees, fruits, animals, soil, foods and songs. Mark Lane is a columnist for the Daytona Beach News-Journal and an author of multiple books, including Roaring Reptiles, Bountiful Citrus, and Neon Pies: An Unofficial Guide to Florida's Official Symbols.
Since 2007, journalist Art Levy has traveled the state, interviewing prominent Floridians for Florida Trend, a statewide news magazine. Many of the interviews were compiled in a 2019 University Press of Florida book titled "Made in Florida: Artists, Celebrities, Activists, Educators, and Other Icons in the Sunshine State." His interviews dig deep into his sujects, and tell a larger story of Florida's culture, history and significance. Join Art as he reads from some of his more than 150 interviews and tells stories about Florida's most interesting people and places. During his Master the Possibilities presentation, he'll focus on iconic Floridians from across the state, including Marion County interviewees such as Ocala resident Albert "Chainsaw Al" Dunlap, a corporate turnaround specialist, and Don "Big Daddy" Garlits, a champion drag racer who also lived in Ocala.

A narrated slide presentation from New York Times Bestselling author Michael J. Tougias. We have all heard amazing stories of survival that rendered us awestruck. But too often, we don't realize that there is a wealth of information to learn from people who make it to the other side of life's most daunting challenges. In Extreme Survival author Michael J. Tougias first captivates the audience by chronicling harrowing survival stories and then discusses the lessons learned. Tougias uses slides from some of the survival events to give the audience an edge-of-your-seat experience that also provides useful techniques that we can all use when faced with adversity or aspire to achieve a difficult goal.
Tougias has interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds, and researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. He supplements their stories with a handful of first person accounts from some of the toughest survivors in history.
In this book, Extreme Survival, Tougias shares what he has learned about decision making under pressure and the mindsets and techniques survivors used to channel their energy into proactive decisions that saved their lives. He demonstrates that the same techniques can help anyone be more resilient when feeling overwhelmed or facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge in their personal or professional life. The methods shared can also be used by anyone who has an important goal – they provide inspiration and step by step practices to overcome obstacles and achieve a person’s full potential. Tougias has written seven survival and rescue books and Extreme Survival is the culmination of his life’s work of interviewing and researching the toughest survivors over the past three decades. Some of the survivors from history include John McCain, Mary Rowlandson (captive during King Philip’s Indian War), Howard Blackburn, Captain Bligh, Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, mountainman Hugh Glass, Admiral Byrd, Shackleton, WWII pilot James Whittaker, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK (PT109), USS Indianapolis survivors, and many more from mountain climbers to early explorers of the new world. Praise for Extreme Survival. Instructor Michael Tougias will be presenting remotely.
