Philosophy and Everyday Life

In our culture, solutions to life’s challenges range from coffee with a friend to seeing a therapist. Three thousand years before clinical therapy ever existed, people turned to philosophy. (Socrates said the fundamental philosophical problem was not "How does the world work?" but "How should we live our lives?") In this fun, discussion-based class, we'll look briefly at what a few famous philosophical advice-givers have said—including Socrates, Seneca, and Nietzsche—but our main focus will be taking on the philosopher’s role ourselves. For example, we'll explore how mapping the relationship between our knowledge and our emotions can help us better handle difficulties in our own lives. Bring your brain and a pen! See www.learnatnorth.org for textbook information. A $2 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first day of class. Exact cash only. See Textbook and Supply List for textbook information.
