Twentieth Century Art: The Growth of Abstraction 1950-Present

The Growth of Abstraction 1950-Present is the second part of the course that introduced the exciting and controversial twentieth century art world as artists moved away from representational to abstract work. In the previous class we studied the major artists and movements that introduced a departure from portraying reality and instead focused on using color, shape, form and line to capture their inner spirit and achieve their effect. In this follow-up course, we will start with Abstract Expressionism and continue studying the variations in this style through contemporary mainstream and fringe multicultural abstract artists, including the San Francisco School, the Bay Area Abstract Expressionists, The New York School, the Taos Moderns, Native American Painters, and Northwest Artists. We will examine the work in relation to concurrent historical, social, and technological developments. In addition, we will review the terminology and language of abstraction to better describe, understand and analyze the works we study. Textbook, World of Art: Abstract Art, Anna Moszynska, 2020.  See Textbook and Supply List for textbook information.
