Dollar Princesses: Heiress in the Gilded Age

The phrase “Gilded Age” was coined by Mark Twain and described a period in American history during the late 19th century. We will explore some of the facets of the era, who and what created it, and how a certain class of women became bartering instruments between wealthy Americans and financially troubled Europeans. Some of these international unions brought interesting changes to American society and European traditions. Among the many cash for class women we will meet: Jenny Jerome, Consuelo Vanderbilt, Consuelo Yznaga, Mary Leiter, Minnie Stevens, Nancy Astor, May Goelet and around 20 others.
