American Women Photographers (1840-1920)

In this introduction to the first U.S. photographers, we will focus on a selection of women who created work in 1840-1920. Each week, we will thoroughly discuss one image for each of the two or three women photographers. Following the discussion, there is a biographical sketch and presentation of additional images created by the photographer. Our study includes a brief review of early photographic techniques, with an opportunity to closely examine a daguerreotype, ambrotype, stereograph, carte de visite, cabinet card, and tintype. Photographers include Charlotte Prosch, Francis and Mary Allen, Evelyn Cameron, Francis Benjamin Johnston and Gertrude Kasebier.
