    We will dive into the most significant naval battle in the U.S. Navy's history. The Battle of Midway in 1942 shifted America’s strategic initiatives, but many of the battle’s facts are misconstrued by Western historians and Hollywood. We will gain insights into aircraft carrier operations, the officers and sailors who planned and fought this epic battle, and the operational and strategic implications to the U.S. and Japan. Note: Participants may choose to attend each week either in-person or online.

    During the first half of the 20th century, Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) seemed to be everywhere and do everything. He was a poet, political activist, investigative reporter, columnist, film critic, lecturer, folk singer, musicologist, Lincoln biographer, children’s author, novelist and media celebrity. We will discuss his accomplishments and touch on his personal life, including his wife’s world-famous goats. Recommended textbook: Discovering Carl Sandburg: The Eclectic Life of an American Icon by John W. Quinley (2022), ISBN: 979-8218051204.

Using video clips and hundreds of historical images, we will examine the contributions, struggles and legacies of air devils, inventors, criminals, scientists, pirates, engineers, sex workers, comic-book heroines, midwives, ghostbusters, explorers, authors and more.

    We will use games as a lens to understand ancient and contemporary cultures. We will learn the history of popular games from ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Romans, Vikings and Aztecs. We will also cover the various philosophies of games and how they can help us better understand our world today. Classes 1-4 will include lecture, game-play and discussion; the last two classes are field trips. Prerequisites: Good sportsmanship. Notes: Field-trip locations are located within a 10-minute drive of the Reuter Center. Materials fee (payable to field-trip host): $7.

    Queen Victoria (1819-1901) had the second longest reign in British history, more than 63 years. We will look at some of the major events of her reign, societal changes that took place and the complex relationship between Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert.

    The names of whiskey’s founding fathers are easily recognizable—Johnny Walker, Jack Daniel, “Pappy” Van Winkle—but what about the women of whiskey? Nettie Harbinson, Margie Smith, Elizabeth Cumming and many more played an integral role in the spirit’s history, yet they remain unknown. We will pay homage to these women by learning how they changed whiskey around the world. We will end with an optional, fun and informative whiskey-tasting. Notes: Participants may choose to attend classes 1-4 either in-person or online. Class 5 will take place at the instructor’s home in North Asheville. Materials fee (payable to instructor): $20 for whiskey-tasting.
