Science says red wine is bad for you! No, now they say red wine is good for you. Wait...never mind, it's bad again! Have you ever noticed how the same research topic can produce seemingly contradictory headlines? What's really going on behind these conflicting claims? Understanding basic statistics can help unlock these mysteries and make you a more confident consumer of information. In this course, we'll explore fundamental statistical concepts like averages, probability, and sampling in an approachable way using real-world examples, no strings attached or advanced mathematical background required! Learn to spot common statistical pitfalls and misleading presentations of data that show up in media reports and research claims. Through engaging activities and relatable scenarios, you'll develop an intuitive understanding of key statistical ideas that will help you evaluate the numbers you encounter in daily life. Whether you're reading news articles, reviewing medical treatment options, keeping up with your favorite sports teams, or just curious about how statistics shape our understanding of the world, this course will give you practical tools to interpret data with greater confidence and clarity.

Carrie Seigler holds a BA from Furman University and MA from Princeton University, both in Sociology. A current PhD candidate at Princeton, Carrie believes everyone can develop statistical literacy in a supportive, engaging environment.
