Ghosts of Amistad, In the Footsteps of the Rebels

First we will watch this  award winning documentary documentary by Tony Buba based on Marcus Rediker’s book, “The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom.” It chronicles a trip to Sierra Leone in 2013 to visit the home villages of the people who seized the slave schooner Amistad in 1839. The film uses the knowledge of villagers, fishermen, and truck drivers to recover a lost history from below in the struggle against slavery. Follwing the documentary we will have comments and a question and answer period with Dr. Rediker.

Marcus Rediker, Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh, earned his PhD in history at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been active in a variety of social justice and peace movements and has written, cowritten or edited nine books.
