Churches, Saints, and Art

Participants will consider how the art in churches and the very design of churches work together to convey meaning. Since the saints have figured so importantly in the art we find in churches, we’ll give saints special consideration in this course. We’ll concentrate mainly – but not exclusively – on Medieval and Renaissance churches. These include well-known churches, such as the Sistine Chapel and Chartres Cathedral and hidden gems, such as St. Maria’s Church, a small Medieval church in a Swedish village.
