Separation of Church and State: Does it Exist Anymore?
The separation of church and state is a hallmark of American constitutional jurisprudence. Yet, what "separation" exactly means has been interpreted and re-interpreted differently over the centuries. This course will explore recent Supreme Court decisions, socio-political trends, and legislative efforts involving the balance between keeping government separate from religion while protecting people's right to express and practice their religion. The history of the Establishment Clause and its future considering the current Supreme Court will be discussed.
