Richard Rodgers’ career in writing great Broadway musicals included work with two superb, but very different lyricists over 40 years. This course will review the history of musical theatre largely through Rodgers’ music, while highlighting the approach to lyric writing that Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein used and how Rodgers changed his style with each. The course will include biographical detail, include interview clips with both Rodgers and Hammerstein, discuss shows in the context of their history, and of course, include many great performance clips of songs, some well-known and some not.
