The course will examine Kenya's history and political development from pre-colonial times to the present, with roughly half the course devoted to developments during the 1888-1963 colonial era and half to the independent governments of the last 60 years. The first lecture will trace the history of Kenya's people to 1918; the second will deal with economic and political developments during the inter-war years; the third will examine the economic and social development of the Mau Mau movement and the war of liberation against the British, and the attainment of independence in 1963; the fourth will deal with Jomo Kenyatta's government 1963-78; the fifth with the regime of Daniel arap Moi 1978-2002; and the final lecture will explore the governments of Mwai Kibaki 2002-2013 and Uhuru Kenyatta 2013-2022 up to the 2022 General Election.
