Upon his death in 1826, Thomas Jefferson left written direction for the inscription he desired for his tombstone. It was to read: "Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, Author of the Declaration of American Independence, and the Virginia Statutes for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia." This class will be a guided examination of each of these three elements, reviewed in both a short- and long-range historical context.
