This course asks how we extract meanings and experience emotions from encounters with fiction, poetry, painting, and music. What do works of art "say"? What is their purpose and why do they matter? How do they convey their content? How should we respond in order to realize their full value? Are there any objective ways to evaluate them? Class discussion will be emphasized.
