European Enlightenment: The Influence of Greece and Rome

We will look at selected ideas from antiquity and their importance in the 1700s, 1800s, and today. In this sweep, we shall look at snippets from the writings of Heraclitus, Plato, Parmenides, and Roman writers. Then we will talk about John Stuart Mill, Thomas Paine, Mary Leadbeater, Francis Hutcheson and such important concepts as social contract, egalitarianism, the use of reason, and the greatest happiness of the greatest number.
