Native Plants

"A bluish colored, funnel-formed flower in lowlands in bloom." Thomas Jefferson, April 16, 1766. As Jefferson realized, our area is blessed with an incredible diversity of native flora. The bluebells he enjoyed and described in his Garden Book are still blooming in his lowlands. Learn to garden with native herbaceous and woody plants with the ultimate goal of having a naturalistic looking garden. We will cover identification, soil, and other needs of some of our most beloved natives. Also, pollinators and other invertebrates will be discussed as well as recommendations on tools, fertilization, and mulching. Note: First four classes are indoors, fifth class is a visit to the instructor's home garden in Ivy in April.
