Art in History: Europe, 1914-1945    NEW!

Europe after 1914 descended into the horror of two world wars, the birth of communism and the rise of fascism. How did artists respond to these events? The course will examine some of the key three-dimensional works of art from four sculptors in central Europe: Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Kathe Kollwitz in Germany; Imre Varga in Hungary; and Constantin Brancusi in Rumania. This is not a history of art course, but rather an art in history course. The focus will be on certain figurative sculptures and monuments, both personal and public, which reflect the deepest unspoken thoughts of the people; not usually covered in standard history books.
